 Vietnam: Cultural Tips
Vietnamese always write the date first, then month and year follows.
Appointment times and vacation
Every year, Vietnamese have 5 times for Vacation. The biggest holiday of year is lunar New Year, which follows the Moon Calendar, it can be in the end of January or in February. Like every country in the world, we also celebrate the Western New Year, 1st January. We have independent day in 2nd September and Revolution day in 30th April; also we have Labor Day on the 1st May.
One of the most biggest vacations is Lunar new year what we call ‘Tet’, in this time, we tend to reunite with our family, you can receive the ‘Lucky money’ for the lucky new year, and also we choose the people, who is the first entrance to our house, who can bring lucky and happy for our family for the coming year. However, in Tet, you should avoid something like swept your house or quarrel, even angry with any body, you should smile because we believe that, what ever happen with you in Tet will happen in coming year.
Traffic
The working time in Vietnam start at 7.30 am and finish at 4.30 to 5.00 p.m, that is the crush our hour in the most city. Vietnamese’s transportations are motorbike and private car, that make the traffic more and more crowded.
One of the special transportation in Vietnam is ‘Xich lo’, that can makes you feel relax with one kind of bicycle and enjoy the city with sunny in the day and cool wind in the evening.
Food
Vietnam is closed to China and Thailand, that is the reason our food have the mix between Thai food and Chinese food but a lot of vegetable and rice is the main dish for every family. However, we have the different taste from every region. The South people trend to eat sweet and spicy, the Middle people like very spicy, with the taste of chilly, but the North people prefer salty and spicy with the taste of pepper. We use Chopstick to eat, so you should know about that before you are invited to go restaurant or to our home.
Vietnamese is alcoholic, we can drink but people like to drink local wine.
One of the Vietnamese particular is that we like to invite people to our home to have dinner, and if you are our guest, you should bring only fruit or without any thing.
Vietnamese always drink tee or coffee after meal and Toothpick also one of the most important think after meal in Viet Nam.
Clothes
Traditional dress for Vietnamese lady is ‘Ao dai’.
We prefer to wear formal clothes in office, no pullover or short pan in offices even in summer.
Gift
One of the gifts that Vietnamese avoid is handkerchief, we think that it can make everything is broken, however when people receive that, they can give you a small money, we call that is money to buy the unlucky thing. Normally, we don’t open the gift in front of anybody.
Name
We have a different way with another country in the order of our name. The first is family name, after that is middle name and the end is the name that we call normally. Vietnamese language has a lot of level to call according to age or relative, which is the reason why in office we can call our colleague without their name but must to follow the level of age.
We rarely call our family name, we only call the normal name. Vietnamese ladies don’t have to change family name after get marry.
Respectful
When you receive something from the older people, or you want to give them some thing, you must to bring it by both of your hand. In business, in party when you cheer up, you should take care about the position between you and the other one, if they are have a higher position your glass must to be a little bit lower than theirs.
Attitude
Vietnam is quite sexual balance. It is not difficult to see a leader or management is a woman. We also respect the lady in office.
Communication
Typically Vietnamese is modest. We don’t want to talk too much about ourselves, because people will think that they can’t believe in you until you can prove something to them.
