Projects and Main Areas of Research
The Centre's main areas of research and development are human health and the environment. Applying the methods of biotechnology, the Centre concentrates on finding solutions to medical problems and problems related to environmental protection and the remediation of contaminated sites.
The main research activities of the Centre are: cytomics - molecular analysis and engineering of cells, pathogenicity research and vaccine development, new bioactive compounds, environmental biotechnology, bioprocess engineering and validation, and structure and function of biological macromolecules.
The expertise in biotechnology for health purposes includes gene, immune and cell therapy, tissue engineering, bone and tissue cell differentiation, the development of vectors and expression systems, the development of vaccines and vaccination strategies, the mechanism of antigen presentation and immune response, screening and characterisation of new biological active compounds, combinatorial molecular repertoires, growth factors and receptors, development and validation of biotechnological processes, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics and structure research.
The Centre is financed to a ratio of 90:10 by the federal government and by the state government of Lower Saxony.
